Stonetrail offers guests a unique opportunity to take to the fells on horseback straight from your door. Alison, the owner, offers guided treks from an hour to several days with routes tailored to suit each riders ability.
Livery facilities are available for guests wishing to bring their own horse with grazing, stabling, tack room, outdoor arena and easy to follow route maps. Our unique location in a quiet and relaxed setting gives us direct access to miles of bridleways taking us along the tops of the fells and through hidden valleys and our guests are returning every year having discovered a wonderful place to ride and enjoy a peaceful holiday.
Our cottages are a good choice for guests with non riding partners. Children aged 13 upwards can join on of our rides without a parent / carer. Mountain bikes are available for hire and we supply walking routes.
Please note riding is not available every day. We advise you check availability before booking your accommodation if you wish to ride during your stay.
A one hour ride with lovely views of the local fells. Ridden at walking pace and suitable for all abilities. Riders must be off the lead rein.
Our 90 min trek is very popular for riders who want a quiet relaxed hack out. Led by mature, qualified ride leaders, this ride is ridden at a walk and trot pace with an optional canter for those who can with as much instruction as you wish. The route is mostly off road with a short section on a quiet unfenced lane. Minimum age 10 years.
Our 2 hour ride takes us through the stunning Howgill fells and Wild Boar fell where we have enjoy some exhilerating canters. The scenery is quite stunning and we often ride without meeting anyone. The canters on this ride are optional. Minimum age 10 years
We have several routes for our half day hacks which include 3 hours in the saddle. A very popular route is our ride into the beautiful Mallerstang Valley along the Lady Anne Bridleway which follows the River Eden towards Pendragon Castle, reputed to be the home of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur. We enjoy some great canters on this route and the scenery is superb. Another popular route is our ride through the hidden valleys of the Howgill Fells where we pass herds of fell ponies and enjoy an exhilerating canter along Ash fell. Suitable for experienced riders who can canter in open spaces on undulating terrain. Minimum age 10 years
Our full day pub rides are very popular as they give experienced riders a chance to ride in a small group at a varied pace with some exhilerating canters. Riders should therefore be confident and experienced at riding at all paces in open spaces. We start at 10am and return at 4pm with a one hour lunch stop and generally cover about 18 miles. Adults only.
Our route choices are:
The Howgill Fells Ride with a pub stop in Ravenstonedale at either The Black Swan or the Kings Head
The Mallerstang Valley Ride with a pub stop at the Black Bull in Nateby
Please note the price excludes the cost of lunch.
If you have a number of riders who wish to ride together our family and friends private group ride option is a good way to lower the cost as well as tailoring your ride to suit your group. You can book a private group ride from 1 hour to a full day and we can be more flexible with our minumum age and ability. This is also a great option for more experienced riders who wish to request a particular route and style of ride. Please contact Alison us to discuss your individual requirements and preferred dates. The following prices include a private group ride for up to 6 persons.
